Job Description
Sunderland, Vermont Position Profile Product Development Specialist — Women's Position Summary The Product Development Specialist should be thoroughly familiar, and enjoy, the country lifestyle reflective of the Orvis culture and customer. The Product Development Specialist will be responsible for the development and profit of items created for the Women’s Catalog, Retail, and Web Divisions. The Product Development Specialist should demonstrate a positive and friendly attitude towards fellow Associates and customers, yet be able to firmly negotiate with various vendors. Company Interfaces This position reports directly to the Vice President, Women’s Sportswear. At present, this is an individual contributor position and does not involve supervision of other Associates. The position will interface on a daily or routine basis with: other Clothing PDS’s; DMM of Women’s Inventory Mgt.; Sourcing; Sample Room Coordinator; and Advertising team which consists of catalog production personnel; vendors; Retail Merchandising, and others as needed. Key Performance Measurements Total Gross Profit increase of sub-categories. Success rate of new products. Service level in first two weeks of catalog. Inventory turnover rate. Quality as measured by customer returns and other criteria to be determined. General Responsibilities The position will have primary responsibility for: Product development of items across several apparel subcategories. A thorough knowledge of the marketplace, trends, competition. Continually improve the quality of existing product, and ensure quality standards for new products. Analyzing past product performance to determine future viability or predict the success of new products under development. Developing new products that meet and lead market demand. This includes the complete process from design to manufacture to packaging to pricing to delivery schedules. Working closely with the DMM to ensure the proper representation of product to our valued customer. Travel to vendors and shows. Qualifications The position will require a strong knowledge of the Women’s Apparel Marketplace, with 3‑5 years experience in a direct mail and retail company preferred. Experienced in vendor negotiations, quality evaluations, and creative new product development. Must be thoroughly familiar with and enjoy the country lifestyle, to understand the customer's needs and desires. The individual's honesty and integrity must be above reproach.
